Overview
Women's Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) is the female competitive discipline of gymnastics. Gymnasts within WAG programs use 4 apparatus, consisting of floor, uneven bar, vault, and balance beam.
The WAG competitive program run by the Academy offers the National Levels Stream that has been designed to assist young gi rls and teenagers to develop basic skills at a rate commensurate with their ability and need. There are 10 levels within the WAG program, and gymnasts move from level 1 through to level 10 at their own rate. Gymnasts have the opportunity to compete at Club, Regional, State and National level.
The initial levels (1-3) are based on fundamental skills which can be performed in choreographed routines and evaluated within the club. Gymnasts are introduced to basic conditioning, flexibility and strength. These attributes are essential in the development of the gymnastic skills. The subsequent levels (4-10) are based on compulsory elements being incorporated into optional routines and evaluated at State based competitions.
The WAG Development Squad is a fast-track program for WAG Level 1-3 gymnasts. Placement within this squad is by invitation of the senior coaching staff, and continuation in the squad is dependant upon the gymnast maintaining a suitable standard of gymnastic development.
The State Levels stream represents a bridging program designed to keep older, less competitive gymnasts involved in the sport from levels 4-10.
WAG Level 1-2 gymnasts train for 2 hours per week, and there is a choice of classes on either Thursdays or Saturdays.
WAG Level 3 gymnasts train for 4 hours per week.
WAG Level 4 gymnasts train up to 11 hours per week
WAG Level 5-10 gymnasts train up to 14.5 hours per week
